He was accused of unethical conduct by an unnamed "younger male umpire". Friemel was therefore suspended for 12 months, starting on June 19 last year, which is why we did not see him at last year's Wimbledon.

Friemel denied the accusations, but did not want to file an appeal because, according to him, it would not bring him anything.

He claims he did nothing unethical.

- Drinking a nightcap together during the tournaments was and is actually quite normal - Friemel pointed out, to the accusations that he has issued an inappropriate invitation to a younger colleague, but he added that the meeting never happened.

As a reminder, Friemel disqualified Djoković from the US Open in 2020 after accidentally hit a line judge with a ball at the end of a game.

The suspension of the German umpire runs until 18 June 2022, after which he could return to his professional duties.
