Chinese President Xi Jinping

The organizers of the COP26 climate summit in the Scottish city of Glasgow properly embarrassed themselves because of the treatment of the leader of one of the most powerful countries in the world - Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Namely, as the official Beijing announced today, he was not given the opportunity to address the summit participants via a video link, and instead he had to send a written speech.

- As far as I understand, the organizers of the conference did not provide a video link - said the spokesman of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wang Wenbin, Sputnik reports.

President Xi, who is not attending the gathering in person, sent his introductory address to the Heads of State and Government attending the Glasgow climate summit in writing, but, even though his country is one of the biggest polluters in the world,  he did not offer any additional promises regarding the combat against climate change.

However, he called on others to keep their promises and strengthen mutual trust and cooperation.

Climate summit observers have expressed concern that Xi's physical absence in Glasgow means that China is not ready to offer more concessions in this round of negotiations, Tanjug reports.

Beijing, however, reminds that China has already made numerous promises last year, among other things that it will eliminate harmful gas emissions by 2060, increase the total solar and wind generation capacity to 1.200 gigawatts by 2030 and limit the use of coal from 2026.

It is also worth mentioning that the organizing committee of the summit did not explain why Jinping was not provided with a video link.
