Théoneste Bagosora

80-year-old Bagosora was at the time of the massacre a higly-ranked official in the Rwandan Ministry of Defence and was sentenced to life in prison by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. However, this was later reduced to 35 years, BBC reports.

His son Achille has confirmed to a BBC reporter that his father died in a hospital in Bamako, where he had been treated for heart conditions.

Around 800,000 people, mostly pertaining to the Tutsi ethnic group, were killed over a period of 100 days in Rwanda. The series of massacres began after 6 April 1994, when the plane carrying Rwanda's President at the time, Juvenal Habyarimana, was shot down on.

Bagosora was arrested two years later in Cameroon, where he had taken refuge after the Rwandan Patriotic Front led by Paul Kagame took over the power.

The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda found him guilty of crimes against humanity in 2008.  He was also convicted for organising the assassinations of several prominent political figures, including the Prime Minister Agathe Uwilingiyimana.
