Russian President Vladimir Putin rejects murder accusation

The President of Russia Vladimir Putin has sent a brutal message to the European Court of Human Rights through the words of the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

This was done in response to their latest judgement which conuded that the Russian Federation together with the Kremlin head of state was responsible for the brutal killing of the former spy Alexander Litvinenko in 2006 in London.

Kremlin has rejected the ECHR judgement as unsubstantiated, saying that this court hardly has the authority or technological capacity to possess information on the crime which shook the world to its core 15 years ago.

- There are still no results from this investigation and making such claims is at the very least unsubstantiated - Peskov said.

Litvinenko died in agony in a hospital in 2006

As a reminder, the European court in Strasbourg found on Tuesday that Russia was responsible for the assassination of Litvinenko, who died after most likely being poisoned with polonium-210, a rare radioactive isotope, at the London "Millennium" hotel.

Litvinenko (43), a former FSB agent and whistleblower, had become a vocal critic of the Russian President after moving to Britain, having also worked with the British Secret Intelligence Service MI6.

A British investigation concluded in 2016 that Putin has most likely authorised the Russian intelligence operation for Litvinenko's assassination. It was also uncovered that the former KGB member Andrei Lugovoy and another Russian citizen, Dmitry Kovtun, carried out the assassination in the form of an operation probably directed by the Federal Security Service.
